Meet the Red Panda

This animal is cute, fluffy, red, and like a raccoon—what image does this spark in your mind? You might have thought of the red panda, but this little red creature isn’t a panda at all. The red panda, also known as the fire fox, comes from the family Ailuridae. The red panda is more commonly related to weasels, skunks, and raccoons. It’s native to and lives in southwestern China and the eastern Himalayas.
The main food that red pandas eat is bamboo, which makes up 90-98% of their diet. They eat roughly 2-4 lbs. of bamboo per day, and they prefer to eat young shoots and leaves. They also eat fruit, insects, and small animals, but this is only a tiny portion of their diet. These critters have small “false thumbs” that helps them to eat their food. This also gives them excellent grip skills like one of its relatives, a raccoon. Its lifespan is 8-10 years, but the actual red panda lives about 20 years.
A few uncommonly known facts are that they have the ability to rotate their ankles so they can climb down a tree headfirst. They are also nocturnal animals, and they communicate to each other using twitters, squeaks, and huffquacks.
Red pandas are classified as an endangered species today because of habitat loss and poaching for their furs.
