A new year of Imperial Science Society meetings was kicked off on August 20 in Room 201 of the Imperial Academy complex. In attendance were 35 online students and nine local students. The meeting included a current event from club advisor Stephen Coats, a jam-packed business section, and a lively chat session.

At the start of the school year, the enrollment was wiped. Now, a total of 50 students are enrolled in the club. A new assistant advisor has been added to the club, science teacher Seth Malone. He attends the meetings, assists with contests, and oversees the ISS Newsletter section about scientific laws.

While one of the club’s objectives has always been to give students leadership opportunities, the officers change every year. The new officers this year are: senior Logan Chadwick as president, junior Lucas Adams as vice president, junior Abby Bancroft as secretary, junior Emily Hensley as treasurer, and senior Saraa Warminski as managing editor of the newsletter. There are also six other committee members which meet once a week with the officers to discuss club affairs.

Two field trips are being planned for this year. One of them will be to Alabaster Caverns State Park in northwestern Oklahoma. This one is tentatively planned for October 25, the Sunday after Royalty Week. The other field trip is planned for early June, and it will be at club member Emily Hensely’s property in Arkansas. Further details about these new field trips will be forthcoming in the next few months.

Another new addition to the club will be in the form of contests. The fall semester contest is a challenge called “The Great Egg Drop.” The goal of the contest is to drop a chicken egg from the highest point possible without it cracking. “That’s harder than you think,” Malone remarked at the end of the August 20 meeting. The spring semester challenge is currently a secret.

Another big addition to the club will be an ISS-only website separate from the Moodle page. Club committee member Gabriel Mainardes created the website. The website is available on the Moodle page. It will be a hub for club sign up and club news. The committee is also hoping to add new merchandise, especially an ISS quarter-zip pullover.
