On July 29, 2025, at 7:25 p.m. EDT the sixth biggest earthquake in history unfolded. It was caused by the Pacific tectonic plate slipping beneath the North American plate. This fault slipped up to 30 feet! Even though it was the sixth biggest earthquake in human history, the damage was not too severe.
The original earthquake was a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter Scale, and it had several intense aftershocks. The most severe damage just noted in the tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The earthquake’s epicenter was located on the other side of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Pacific Ocean. Shockwaves on land were felt as early as 11 minutes after the initial shock, with the biggest non after shock felt on land measuring 85.8 PGV (peak velocity). The earthquake produced tsunamis that flooded the nearby fishing village of Severo-Kurlisk and caused structure damage and injuries in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. There were four main aftershocks, with the biggest one measuring up to a magnitude of 7.7. The tsunami concerns were so great that a tsunami watch was issued along the coast of California; even though the waves reached up to a height of eight feet, no damage was reported.
